Aerodynamic Performance and Static Stability Characteristics of Aircraft with Tail-Mounted Propellers

In this combined experimental and numerical study, the propeller–airframe aerodynamic interaction is characterized for an aircraft configuration with propellers mounted to horizontal tailplane. The contributions of propeller airframe overall loading are distinguished in analyses by using a combination external balance internal load cell data. Validated computational fluid dynamics simulations then employed quantify at component level. results show that installation shifts neutral point aft increasing thrust. For considered herein, yawing moment due sideslip increased approximately 10%, independent thrust coefficient. changes airframe-induced flowfield dominant factor change stability performance. prominent effects occur high angle attack, because condition experiences significant nonuniform inflow affects relatively large diameter compared tailplane span leads root vortex causes effectiveness reduce inboard-up rotating propeller.
